Welcome to a special Leadership Channel podcast on TotalPicture Radio. This is Peter Clayton reporting. William Pelster, is Managing Principal, Talent Development, Deloitte Services LP. In his current role as National Director of Talent Development, Bill is responsible for the total development experience of Deloitte’s professionals; his knowledge spans the many aspects of HR to include strategy, talent acquisition and university relationships, HR technology platforms, knowledge management, strategic change, communication, culture assessment, training, and HR delivery models. Bill manages a team of almost 200 talent development professionals based in the U.S. and India, delivering services to over 45,000 U.S. and India-based professionals.

As I said in my introduction, Deloitte is opening a new “Deloitte University” in Westlake, Texas next year. Can you give us some background on this very significant investment?

What about faculty? Who will be teaching at Deloitte University?

What kind of metrics do you have that illustrates the huge investment Deloitte is making in developing its people is worth the spend?

Will all professional hires at Deloitte be given an opportunity to attend Deloitte University?

Are your recruiters promoting Deloitte University in job interviews?

From what I understand, you’re transforming all of your learning curricula across each of your businesses -- no more lectures and powerpoint presentations?

I’m interested in hearing more about the learning techniques you’re implementing -- scenarios, simulations, and what technologies you employ to accomplish this?

How are candidates for leadership development programs selected at Deloitte?  Is there a formal process?

I know you are an expert in the many forms of learning and the use of technology to facilitate the entire change, communication, knowledge management and learning process. How does Deloitte track the results and ROI of its leadership development programs? 

A few years ago, TotalPicture Radio recorded a very popular interview with Cathy Benko, Deloitte’s Chief Talent Officer and co-author of the bestselling book, Mass Career Customization.  Recently, Cathy Benko co-authored a new book called The Corporate Lattice. The book describes a contemporary model to help companies achieve high performance. Can you briefly discuss The Corporate Lattice, and how it fits into your learning and development initiatives?

From your perspective, what is the biggest challenge -- and opportunity -- HR leaders are facing as we move to 2011?

William (Bill) Pelster is a principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP’s (Deloitte Consulting) Human Capital practice with 20 years of industry and consulting experience. Bill's knowledge spans the spectrum of human resources (HR) and human capital areas, including technology adoption, strategic change, communication, culture assessment, training and talent management. Additionally, Bill has supported some of the largest HR transformation programs based on SAP, Oracle and PeopleSoft enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

As Deloitte Consulting’s Global Learning & Development leader and the U.S. leader of Technology Adoption, Bill is a specialist in the many forms of learning and the use of technology to facilitate the entire change, communication and learning processes. He has lead the development of two Deloitte Consulting industry-leading tools to rapidly create and document global HR and learning processes. LearningPrint and Fast Track for Learning allow project teams to help rapidly transform and build a high-performance organization.

As a leader in Deloitte Consulting’s offshore Human Capital practice, Bill has been critical in building Deloitte Consulting’s ability to provide high-quality, low-cost blended HR solutions by sourcing providers, building relationships, and creating the processes and workflows necessary to deliver HR solutions to more than 25 clients during the last two years.

Bill's background in HR and Learning, degrees in computer science and business administration (MBA), and practical experience in both government and industry have allowed him to effectively deliver comprehensive, business-oriented solutions to large clients around the world.
