A Real Organization for Talent Acquisition Professionals

Ben Gotkin, Acting Executive Director of The Association for Talent Acquisition Professionals (ATAP) Tells All

Ben Gotkin, Acting Executive Director ATAPGlobal -TotalPicture interviewBen Gotkin

The idea of creating a professional association dedicated to the needs and interests of the talent acquisition community has been debated for a long time. And a number of organizations over the years trying to address this need have come and gone. Turns out, it's not so simple. In fact, it's really hard!

However, there is light at the end of this proverbial tunnel for all you recruiters looking for a place to call home. It's called the Association for Talent Acquisition Professionals - ATAP -- and one of its founding members and acting executive director, Ben Gotkin is here to tell us all about it.

Hi this is Peter Clayton with a Leadership Channel podcast on TotalPicture Radio. When you look at the list of current volunteers leading the Review Board and Working Committee of the ATAP, it's a who's who of thought leaders in the recruiting community. In his day job, Ben Gotkin is a consultant with Recruiting Toolbox, a well-known, and highly respected recruitment management consulting and training company. Prior to joining Recruiting Toolbox he was Director, Talent Acquisition, at Marriott International.

TALKING POINTS:

  1. So the concept for the ATAP has been percolating for quite a while, since 2012, actually, started by you and everyone's friend in the talent acquisition world, Gerry Crispin. Give us some background.
  2. I'd like you to comment on a Hiring Daily article Gerry wrote last year "...despite the fact that recruiting impacts so many millions of lives every year - directly or indirectly - there is no accepted "body of knowledge" that its practitioners universally agree on, which means that recruiting's reputation is being driven without any accepted definition of what it means to be a recruiter."
  3. I encourage those of you interested in this issue to read Gerry's article, titled Building A Case for Building A National Recruiting Association - it really details the "where we came from and how we got here." You'll find a link on Ben's show page, and on  atapglobal.org. It may have been written last year, but it could have been written yesterday.
  4. I'm going to list some bullet points from one of your  conference calls, and I'd like you to respond.  First, "Must be a safe place for discussions on advancing the profession not a place to be sold to."
  5. Which of course brings up "How will this be funded? What does the governance model look like?"
  6. Next, "Ethics standards are important but how do you enforce?
  7. Like I said in my open, Turns out, it's not so simple. In fact, it's really hard!
  8. Let's continue: "Define the value to members."
  9. Ben I would suspect that some of our listeners are thinking, "SHRM has its annual Talent Management Conference and Expo, doesn't that cover the TA community?
  10. Speaking about conferences, I know you've been actively involved in recruitDC. Are you considering that ATAP will host conferences as well?
  11. What are the next steps -- what are you looking to accomplish in 2017?
  12. On the ATAP Website, there is a very large "register interest" form. Who would you like to hear from?
  13. What's the best way for our listeners to connect with you?
