Indeed recently surveyed over one thousand tech hiring managers and recruiters to better understand how the tech talent shortage is impacting their businesses. Almost 9 in 10 respondents (86%) said they find it challenging to find and hire technical talent, with over a third (36%) saying they find it "very" challenging. No surprise, right?

A short time ago I contacted Mark Willaman, founder and CEO, HRMarketer. I was looking for a someone who's in the trenches every day, with their pulse firmly planted on emerging trends and challenges facing HR technology, with a specific focus on the difficulties every company faces recruiting skilled technical talent.

Dan Merton started his digital career over 15 years ago at Outpost.com, an online retailer during the first dotcom boom. After Outpost.com he worked for Cannondale Bicycles as their webmaster, then he really got into digital marketing working for an eCommerce agency, now called BrandShop (formerly SureSource). Dan built the acquisition marketing team for Brandshop, and was able to turn brand marketing into a profit center for their direct-to-consumer eCommerce clients like Coca-Cola, Hershey, Kitchenaid, Guinness, Budweiser, and many others.

Overlapping slightly with BrandShop Dan took on the role of General Manager for an eCommerce platform called Americart. Dan was able to reverse a declining sales trend and put the company back on a growth track by rebuilding the core eCommerce software platform and introducing an aggressive digital marketing effort. This company was then successfully merged with a larger industry player.

Since Americart, Dan has been involved in website publishing, co-founded an eCommerce startup, and now operates his one digital marketing consultancy, LS Media. LS Media focuses on helping their clients grow sales revenue and generate leads from digital marketing while maintaining a positive ROI from marketing.

I admit, when I received a review copy of Tim Leberecht's new book The Business Romantic, (Harper Business) I said, "huh?" and put it on a growing stack of new business books I've received lately. I guess publishers of non-fiction business and career books like January!

Then I watched this video clip of Tim talking about his book and became intrigued.

Tim Leberecht is the chief marketing officer of NBBJ, a global design and architecture firm, which helps organizations like Amazon, Boeing, Google, Samsung, Starbucks, and Tencent create meaningful experiences. Previously, Leberecht was CMO of product design and strategy firm Frog Design. His writing has appeared in Fast Company, Forbes, Fortune and Wired, among other publications.

He has spoken at such venues as TED Global, The Economist Big Rethink, DLD, and the Silicon Valley CEO Summit. His TED Talk "3 Ways to (Usefully) Lose Control of Your Brand" has been viewed by more than 700,000 people to date.

Leberecht is the co-founder of the 15 Toasts dinner series and an advisor to The Human Agency, a collective of social change-makers. He serves on the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Values and on the board of Jump Associates, a strategy and innovation consultancy.
