Mike Adamo Edwards LifesciencesMike Adamo

"As a midsize company who competes against much larger companies like Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson, we generally find our size to be an advantage. While we don't have the household name or brand recognition of a J&J, our size enables us to move quickly on candidates, and our entrepreneurial spirit and rich employee culture shine through in the interview process." Mike Adamo

Welcome to an Inside Recruiting channel podcast on TotalPicture Radio with Peter Clayton reporting with our continuing coverage from SourceCon/ERE Spring 2010 in San Diego, California.

Joining us today is Mike Adamo, Senior Manager, Global Talent Acquisition for Edwards Lifesciences, a global leader in the science of heart valves and hemodynamic monitoring. Headquartered in Irvine, California, Edwards Lifesciences has more than 6,300 employees worldwide, selling medical technologies in nearly 100 countries. The company leverages its research, design, development and marketing expertise to produce products that address specific cardiovascular opportunities including heart valve disease, vascular disease and critical care technologies.

With more than 10 years of experience in medical device recruiting, Adamo leads a team that supports strategic global staffing and executive recruitment.

Questions Peter Clayton asks Mike Adamo

  • Tell us about Edwards Lifesciences. Can you share with us a brief background of your company?
  • In your title is the word "global" I know you have manufacturing facilities in a number of countries. What unique challenges does recruiting in countries as diverse as Switzerland, Puerto Rico, and Singapore create?
  • Does Edwards manufacture in the US?
  • Obviously, you're recruiting and trying to attract the same talent as much larger, and better known companies like GE Medical. Do you find the size of Edwards to be an advantage in recruiting?
  • There's a term many recruiters use to describe highly specialized, hard-to-find candidates with very unique skills: purple squirrels. Considering what Edwards manufactures and sells, I would guess your days are filled with trying to track down purple squirrels. Am I right?
  • So how to you go about finding the purple squirrels?
  • Another challenge: You're in a highly regulated industry. What does this mean for the recruiting function?
  • One of the hot topics at SourceCon and ERE this year is social networking sites like Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook. Is Edwards actively engaged in any of these platforms?
  • Do you have a blogging policy?
  • Does Edwards have a social media manager or agency handling outreach in these communities?
  • What did you learn at SourceCon/ERE this spring?
