How Good Are You at Failure?

According to Barbara Corcoran, she is an Expert.

Barbara Corcoran, Chairman, The Corcoran Group
Barbara Corcoran
Barbara Corcoran's amazing rise to the top has become the stuff of legend and inspiration. Her credentials include straight D's in high school and college and over twenty jobs by the time she turned twenty-three. It was her next job that would make her one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the country-when she borrowed $1000 from her boyfriend and quit her job as a waitress to start a tiny real estate company in New York City. Over the next twenty-five years, she'd parlay that $1000 loan into The Corcoran Group, New York City's leading real estate company with 45 offices, more than 2,150 sales associates and employees in New York City, the Hamptons and Palm Beach. Purchased by Cendant Corporation, Barbara remains the Chairman of the company. (more)

Barbar's essay in Enlightened Power: How Women are Transforming the Practice of Leadership is titled "Failing Well, How to be Vulnerable and Strong." Her National Bestseller, Use What You Got and Other Lessons I Learned from My Mom, reveals that her secret to success has been to steadfastly apply her mom's kitchen table wisdom. The paperback edition is titled, If you Don't Have Big Breasts, put Ribbons in Your Pigtails. All of Barbara's profits from the book fund the specialized education of dyslexic children.

Motivational, inspirational, and sometimes outrageous, Barbara Corcoran's tell-it-like-it-is attitude is a fresh approach to success. According to CNN, Barbara is "the most sought after broker" in the city and is considered one of the most powerful brokers in the country.

Despite her personal achievements, Corcoran said she never lost sight of the key to success in the real estate industry. "It's all about people" how well you treat them, and how well you read them," said Corcoran. "I have never met a winner in the business who wasn't an expert at handling failure. So I closely observe how salespeople handle rejection and how soon they bounce back up. Based on that, I can tell you whether or not they'll become exceptional salespeople. At the same time I have to have confidence in my salespeople, recognize their abilities, and figure out how one individual person can have the impact of fifty." To that end, Corcoran has developed a comprehensive training program for her employees and encourages them to stay abreast of rapid technological changes.
