Letting Goals Take Control of Your Life Can Be Devastating
Stephen Shapiro
Acording to Stephen Shapiro, author of Goal Free Living, we are taught from a young age that in order to achieve great success we must set and achieve our goals. However in doing so, we become focused on where we are going rather than enjoying where we are right now. We sacrifice today in the hope that a better future will emerge, only to discover that achievement rarely leads to true joy. Goal-Free Living presents an alternative philosophy - that we can have an extraordinary life now, all without goals and detailed plans. By living for each moment, itâs possible to have a successful life and follow your passions at the same time. Stephen was interviewed in New York City by Landed Radio Senior Producer/Director, Peter Clayton.
Stephen Shapiroâs career is based on the core belief that every individual and organization has yet to realize its full, extraordinary potential. Guided by this principle, he teaches clients how to identify and leverage their strengths, root out and overcome their weaknesses and ultimately capitalize on opportunities they never knew existed. Shapiroâs career began with the international consulting firm Accenture, where he was a leader of the firmâs reengineering practice. In 1996, he established Accentureâs Global Process Excellence Practice, and became the founder and director of the Center for Process Excellence, an R&D group focused on process, performance improvement, simulation, and innovation. In 1999, he moved to London to head the European Process Excellence Practice.
In 2001, Shapiro changed direction and left the management consulting world to promote his first book, 24/7 Innovation: A Blueprint for Surviving and Thriving in an Age of Change (McGraw-Hill). At that time, he launched the 24/7 Innovation Group, a management education and research organization concentrating on innovation and break-through thinking. In 2003, Shapiro applied the effective innovation and creativity strategy he had developed for his clients to find even more opportunity. That summer, he set out and drove 12,000 miles around the US and interviewed 150 people to research and write his next book.
During his career, Shapiro has advised leading organizations around the world including Staples, General Electric, Lockheed Martin, ABB, Xerox, Avaya, Vodafone, BMW, Williams, Frito Lay, Barclays, the Singapore government, UPS, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. He is also a frequent speaker at industry conferences including The Marketing Forum, The Forrester CIO Forum, and the Human Resources Council. He is a member of the National Speakers Association and has inspired hundreds of thousands of people in 27 countries.
