Agility and Resilience in the Face of Continuous Change.

In a special Leadership segment of Total Picture Radio, you'll meet Curt Welling, president and chief executive officer of AmeriCares, an international humanitarian aid organization that provides immediate response to emergency medical needs -- and supports long term humanitarian assistance programs in the U.S. and around the world.

Recently, I produced and hosted a webinar for the American Management Association titled "Agility and Resiliency in the Face of Continuous Change." The content for the webinar was based on a 2006 Survey commissioned by the AMA and conducted by Jay Jamrog, and the Human Resource Institute. HRI's research found that change isn’t just accelerating but is more disruptive as well. Over two thirds (69%) of respondents acknowledged that their organizations had encountered a disruptive change—defined as a “severe surprise or unanticipated shock.”

Curt knows something about agility and resilience - as a matter of fact, it would be impossible for AmeriCares to perform their mission without being both agile and resilient... two terms that have hit the radar screens of just about every global corporation. In the November 27th issue of BusinessWeek, the following jumped off the page... "A March survey commissioned by IBM showed that 65% of the world's top CEOs plan on radically changing their companies in the next two years."*

HRI's report also found that "Companies that fail to plan—especially for unexpected or catastrophic events— may not have the resilience they need to bounce back from disaster. A March 2006 article in Computer Weekly underscored that point, citing research by the UK’s Henley School of Management that found 46% of small and medium-sized businesses in the UK had no contingency plans in place. It also noted studies on catastrophic data loss by the University of Texas, which found that 43% of businesses suffering such loss never resumed operations, while 51% closed within 24 months and just 6% were able to continue."

AmeriCares is a nonprofit Stamford-based international disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization that supports long-term medical assistance programs and provides emergency relief in the U.S. and around the world. In the U.S. AmeriCares provides basic medical services for the uninsured, refurbishes the homes of the financially and physically disadvantaged and gives a summer camping experience to inner-city children with HIV/AIDS. Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed more than $5 billion in humanitarian aid to 137 countries. Additional Comments from the Organization

AmeriCares began in 1982 following a meeting between American businessman Robert C. Macauley and Pope John Paul II. His Holiness asked Macauley if he could help the people of Poland who were suffering under martial law. Macauley and His Holiness agreed upon a goal of $50,000 worth of medical supplies for the people of the Pope's native Poland. That goal was quickly exceeded when AmeriCares airlifted more than $3.2 million worth of aid to that country. Since then, $5 billion worth of life-saving relief supplies have been delivered, in over 137 countries throughout the world.
