Will Baby Boomers EVER Retire?

This question has come up on numerous occasions recently. Mainly asked by frustrated Gen X'ers and even some Gen Y types. I was listening to a HBR Ideacast with Paul Michelman, a "mad as hell" squeezed in the middle Gen X'er, who told his guest Tamara Erickson, "boomers won't get out of our way." Tammy is a McKinsey Award-winning author, Executive Officer and Member, Board of Directors, of The Concours Group, co-author of Workforce Crisis: How to Beat the Coming Shortage of Skills and Talent, and writes a column for Harvard Business Online called Across the Ages.

And then there's Rupert Murdoch, winner of the über "The Price is Right" contest. Of course, technically, Rupert is a "veteran," born before 1946, but to the professionals in the workforce born after 1965, that hardly matters. What matters is that Rupert is still working. Still doing deals. So is Sumner. So are a lot of people you would think would be off on a yacht somewhere. And it's not just men. Look at Martha Stewart, Ann Moore, Meg Whitman, Oprah!

I am a baby boomer and feel somewhat qualified to answer the headline question. The answer is yes. And no. Yes, we'll retire when we drop dead. And no, it won't be a day sooner.Your comments are welcome.
