Jane Austen... "is all about networking and manners, and the biggest component to doing great networking is having great manners."  - Diane Danielson

England's first truly important female novelist, Jane Austen had difficulty in establishing a reputation for herself. What would have happened if she could have blogged about Tom Lefroy, or Pride and Prejudice? In The Savvy Gal's Guide to Online Networking (or What Would Jane Austen Do?),  Diane K. Danielson imagines Ms. Austen as a modern day blogger, and how she would use online networking.

Welcome to a success strategies edition of Total Picture Radio. Peter Clayton caught up with Diane, CEO and founder of the Downtown Women's Club, blogger for www.womensDISH.com, the Boston Globe and Entrepreneur magazine, to discuss her latest book, The Savvy Gal's Guide to Online Networking (Or What Would Jane Austen Do?). Diane and co-author Lindsey Pollak share the nuts, bolts and savvy secrets that businesswomen need in order to use technology to build professional relationships.

According to their new book, "In some ways, modern networking is no different than what took place in Jane Austen's novels: it's important to know many different people, attend a myriad of social events, and, above all else, have proper manners at all times."

E-mail etiquette tips and tactics.

Show Notes: What Peter Clayton asked Diane:

Why is networking different for women? Don't the same principles apply to both men and women when it comes to networking?

You write, "For business, technology is an equalizer.  I'm shocked at the number of women who are launching businesses and have no knowledge or interest in what technology can do for them." Can you elaborate for us?

What do you cover in your new book The Savvy Gal's Guide to Online Networking?

What does Jane Austen have to do with it?

You and I both know that most people think of networking when they're looking for a job.

Which brings us to social networking sites like linkedin and facebook.

One of the goals of the Downtown Women's Club is to teach women how to use technology to promote themselves and their businesses. I would guess Gen Y are far more "savvy" using technology than those of the Gen X or Boomer population.

You've employed a unique, very online savvy method for publishing your book.

What's the biggest mistake women make when it comes to business networking?

What's happening with the DWC these days?

What's the buzz on career blogs – especially those directed to women's issues?

From the Savvy Gal's Guide to Online Networking:

For those of you who already consider yourselves to be strong networkers, then online networking is even more important to master.  Perhaps you have experienced that "tapped out" feeling—that the same people show up at the same events, and you haven't been expanding your list of client prospects or potential new employers?  Well, you can never feel that way online, where there are infinite ways to meet new people who share your interests.  Even if you've found yourself with too many contacts and so little time, technology can help maintain contact in a time-efficient manner.

As we hope to demonstrate in this book, the possibilities open to you for networking online are virtually limitless.  And that is something that should make the Jane Austen in all of us more than a little curious and reluctant to be left out, or even worse, left behind.
Yet, today, thanks to the Internet, we now have an entirely new world open to us: online networking, where you can connect with others via a few keystrokes and a click of a mouse.  Whether you're looking for clients, funding for your company, a new job, or even a date (you're just as likely to find your Mr. Darcy online as at a formal ball), you can meet or research an infinite number of people through the web.  And professional women are discovering that online networking not only opens doors to new business relationships, but it also helps us manage the relationships we already have in an efficient manner that fits our "always on the go" lifestyles.
