HSM World Business Forum: Claudio Fernández-Aráoz

Great People Decisions: Why They Matter So Much, Why They are So Hard, and How You Can Master Them

Claudio Fernández-AráozClaudio Fernández-Aráoz

What is the #1 factor in career success? "Nothing is more important for your success than making great people decisions." Claudio Fernández-Aráoz

Thursday morning at the HSM World Business Forum began with Patrick Lencioni talking about the importance of building great teams, followed by Tamara Erickson describing her research on managing across generations, and Claudio Fernández-Aráoz explaining great people decisions. After their keynote presentations, they sat down together to discuss managing teams and talent based on their expertise.

Claudio Fernández-Aráoz is a top global expert on hiring and promotion decisions, repeatedly chosen by Bloomberg Business Week as one of the most influential search consultants in the world. A senior adviser of the leading executive search firm Egon Zehnder International, he has been a member of its global executive committee for over ten years, having also led globally the firm's management appraisal practice, its professional development, and the development of its intellectual capital.

A frequent author at Harvard Business Review, his highly acclaimed book Great People Decisions has been rapidly adopted by many major organizations and incorporated into the curriculum of several of the world's leading business schools. With a unique global exposure, his advice has been sought by the CEOs of several of the largest companies in the Americas, Asia and Europe, as well as by some of the most progressive civil services and governments in the world. If you read the Amazon.com reviews of Fernández-Aráoz book, most start with something like, "Great People Decisions should be required reading for every recruiter, hiring manager, and every HR person." I would add to this list CEO, COO, CFO, CMO -- anyone in the C-Suite, and any executive or manager interested in advancing their career.

Fernández-Aráoz helps bring clarity to the importance of hiring and promoting the right people. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to record this interview with him.

After 25 years of executive search practice, Fernández-Aráoz is convinced that nothing is more important for our career success than making great people decisions, because everything we achieve as managers will depend on the people we've chosen. In addition, circling the world at least ten times a year as a consultant and a speaker, meeting thousands of CEOs, senior executives, middle managers, and young professionals, he realized two things: First, the most successful leaders are incredibly focused on people decisions. Second, most of us find these decisions brutally hard, and are quite clueless about the best practices.

Great People Decisions

• Why great people decisions are the key for your personal success
• Why they are the most important factor for building lasting greatness
• Why they are brutally hard: wrong brain, wrong education
• A proven process to make the best appointments, either promoting from within or hiring from outside
• Mastering people decisions in today's global environment

What are Great People Decisions?

Great People Decisions are great appointments, whether promoting someone from within or hiring someone from outside. Great People Decisions produce extraordinary job performance, great personal development, and strong organizational morale. In spite of what most people think, making great people decisions is not an art or the result of an intuition or a gut feeling. It is a craft, and a discipline, that can be learned and should be learned for our personal success.
