It guides you step-by-step through the process of recruiting top employees and building and engaged culture.

Joining me today is Jeanne Meister founding partner of Future Workplace an HR executive network and research firm. I met Jeanne several years ago at an HRPS Global Conference in New York and recorded an interview with her regarding her keynote, and bestselling book, The 2020 Workplace: How Innovative Companies Attract, Develop, and Keep Tomorrow's Employees Today.

The key findings in your new book The Future Workplace Experience highlight results from a global sample of over 2,000 human resource leaders and hiring managers in the United States, UK, Mexico, Japan, Australia, India, France, Canada, Switzerland and Brazil that was sponsored by Cisco. Give us some background and the methodology used.

The quantitative research in your book shows how companies are creating new ways for employees to develop their skills and try out new roles while staying at their current employer. Can you share with us some of the specific results from your research?

I've done a number of jobcasts on JobsinPods with GE and GEICO highlighting their Leadership Programs, which give new high-potential employees the opportunity to test drive a number of career paths. I'm surprised more companies don't take advantage of this type of program. Are you as well?

A key insight from your book: All generations of employees are approaching the workplace with a consumer mindset. Can you expand upon this?

 Continuing on the same line of thought, companies are following a mobile first strategy inside the workplace. Can you unpack this for us?

The Subtitle of your book is 10 Rules for Mastering Disruption in Recruiting and Engaging Employees.  And I'd like to discuss several of them with you. I love rule #1: Make the Workplace an Experience. We've already discussed flex roles and opportunities such as Leadership Programs. What are some other ways organizations are creating experiences for their employees?

Rule #2 is Use Space to Promote Culture. What do you mean by that?

You sent me a PDF Titled Future Workplace Forecast Navigating the Future of Work -- and listeners, you'll find a link to this PDF on Jeanne's show page. One thing that caught my attention: the disconnect between HR leaders and Business Leaders and perceived effect of Recruitment Efforts. What were your findings?

Rule #4: Consider Technology and Enabler and Disruptor. (And I love Kurt Vonnegut's quote at the beginning of the chapter; "I think that novels that leave out technology represent life as badly as Victorians misrepresented life by leaving out sex." You write, "Staying ahead of the technology curve has never been more difficult for corporations."  Again, what did you learn in your research?

Rule #5: Build a data-driven recruiting ecosystem. You write "conventional wisdom in recruiting is that a small percentage of people are active job seekers and the rest are passive candidates, happily employed people who aren't actively looking for a new job but who could be convinced to take a new job under the right circumstances. Today that distinction no longer applies. Why?
