Press Releases 101 with Mickie Kennedy, eReleases

The Art and SEO of Press Release Writing and Distribution with Industry Expert Mickie Kennedy

Mickie Kennedy, eReleasesMickie Kennedy

A Do-it-Yourself approach to press release writing and distribution. Free vs paid? What's the difference between PRNewswire, BusinessWire, and PRWeb? How, and when to write a press release. What are some common mistakes that are made in writing a press release?

This is Peter Clayton, producer/host of TotalPicture Radio, The Voice of Career and Leadership Acceleration™. Welcome to a special Online Strategies Channel podcast. Joining us today is Mickie Kennedy, founder of eReleases, a press release writing and distribution service.

I've been using press releases for years to help promote the interviews with CEOs, thought leaders, subject matter experts, best-selling authors, industry leaders, keynote speakers and visionaries here on TotalPicture Radio, I've used eReleases - as well as other services - for distributing our press releases. As a matter of fact, we had a release promoting our new show with Riviera Advisiors - Insights: Amplified published this week through eReleases - and next week we'll have another release promoting our interview with Mike Hard, CEO of BountyJobs that will be distributed. So I wanted to "go behind the curtain" to find out what makes for a successful press release. Mickie shares his tremendous knowledge and experience with us. There is art, as well as SEO that goes into a well-crafted press release.

Questions we ask Mickie Kennedy in this podcast:

  • Let's start at the beginning. What's your pitch? Who should use press releases services such as eReleases, and why?
  • What is a good length for a press release - most services limit them to 400 or 500 words.
  • What works?
  • What are some common mistakes people make when writing a press release?
  • Okay. I've used your service, and I've used lots of different press release distribution services from free to very expensive. So lets unwrap this a little bit - why not just use the free services out there like pr.com - if you just Google "free press releases" there's lots of them...
  • Your releases are distributed by PRNewswire. What sets them apart from PRWeb or BusinessWire - a couple of the other premium pr services I've used?
  • Talk about industry targeting and why that is important.
  • SEO - search engine optimization. eReleases has been working hard to improve SEO - give us an overview.
  • I tell my clients and guests that a good press release can help build their Google rankings. Do you agree?
  • I have to be honest, Mickie. Most of the releases I've sent have never elicited a phone call, and interview, let alone a sale -- for any of my guests or clients. Have I just wasted their money?
  • Several hours after my releases are published, using eReleases I get a WireWatch report. What is this and how is it generated?
  • Back to the release I sent this week - the headline is TotalPicture Radio Launches Innovative Human Resources and Talent Management Podcast Series with Riviera Advisors - I got google alerts with links to Financial Tech Spotlight, MarketWatch, TheStreet, International Employment Today, Blackmere Consulting,
  • What is the turn-around time? Once I've submitted a release how long does it take for you to distribute?
  • Is there any editorial review?
  • What's the best day of the week to submit a press release? Does it matter?
  • Back to PRWeb for a minute - they send me graphs and charts showing the number of opens and geographic locations where my release was picked up - why don't you guys do that?
  • What haven't I asked that's important for people to know about writing or distributing press releases?
